The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) is an annual event that brings together art, conservation and outdoor enthusiasts for a weekend of education and celebration. This year, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) was proud to participate, sharing valuable information about our efforts to protect and enhance the state's natural resources.
At SEWE 2025, SCDES highlighted two key programs dedicated to the health of South Carolina’s waterways: the Aquatic Nuisance Plant (ANP) Program and the Adopt-A-Stream (AAS) Program. Both initiatives play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and accessibility of our lakes, rivers and streams for all to enjoy.
The Aquatic Nuisance Plant Program focuses on controlling invasive and nuisance vegetation in publicly accessible waters throughout South Carolina. These non-native plants can quickly take over aquatic ecosystems, harming native species, obstructing waterways, and diminishing recreational opportunities. To help prevent the spread of these invasive plants, SCDES encourages all boaters and water recreationists to follow the “Clean, Drain, and Dry” protocol:
By taking these simple steps, outdoor enthusiasts can play a direct role in protecting South Carolina’s aquatic ecosystems from invasive species.
The Adopt-A-Stream (AAS) Program empowers South Carolinians to take an active role in monitoring and protecting the state’s waterways. Through this volunteer-driven initiative, participants are trained to assess water quality, identify potential pollution sources and contribute valuable data that supports conservation efforts.
We greatly appreciate the staff from the Adopt-A-Stream program and their dedication to engaging volunteers across the state in safeguarding our rivers and streams. Their work, in partnership with communities and environmental organizations, ensures that future generations can continue to enjoy clean and healthy waterways.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at SEWE 2025. Your enthusiasm for conservation and environmental stewardship is what makes events like these so impactful.
Mark your calendars: SEWE 2026 will take place February 13-15. We look forward to seeing you there! Until then, stay wild and continue to protect and enjoy South Carolina’s incredible natural resources.
