Air Toxics
SCDES Air Toxics Section works with other Bureau of Air Quality Programs to provide regulatory expertise throughout the permitting process, administering report reviews, compliance inspections, and technical assistance to industrial facilities.
South Carolina is a delegated authority for the EPA’s Risk Management Program (RMP). The RMP Rule implements Section 112(r) of the 1990 Clean Air Act amendments. The program requires facilities that use specified hazardous substances to develop a risk management plan. SCDES supports the RMP program through providing guidance and technical assistance for facilities within South Carolina that have on-site chemicals over a specific threshold quantity, inspecting all the covered facilities in the state on a five-year cycle, and reviewing investigations of accidental releases when they occur.
